Options for Laser Eye Surgery

LASIK

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) uses a computer-programmed laser to sculpt your cornea to the ideal prescription.

During the surgery, your ophthalmologist uses numbing drops to make you comfortable, then makes a small incision in the top corneal layer. The incision creates a thin “flap,” which is folded over to gain access to the underlying corneal tissue, and your cornea is reshaped using a laser.

LASIK surgery is an effective and common treatment, with almost 90% of LASIK patients ending up with vision between 20/20 and 20/40.

PRK

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) also uses a computer-programmed laser to change the shape of your cornea. Although similar to LASIK, the procedures are a bit different.

During surgery, the ophthalmologist removes and discards the cornea’s outer layer using a laser, blade, alcohol solution, or brush. Following this, the cornea is reshaped by removing precise amounts of tissue to match the desired prescription.

After surgery, a special bandage contact lens is placed on your eye for several days. This bandage lens aids with the healing process.

90% of PRK patients end up with 20/40 vision or better around 3 months after surgery.
