Protect Your Eyes From Complications
Diabetes is a disease that affects how your body processes glucose. This medical condition affects a large number of Canadians. Complications from diabetes can also have a significant impact on your vision.
At Village Optical, we recommend annual diabetic eye exams to protect your vision. You can expect eye exams to be performed with compassion and sharp attention to detail.
Your vision deserves special care, and we are here to help.
Your Visual Health Matters
Your vision can blur when blood glucose levels are in the higher range. You may temporarily correct blurred vision by adjusting your insulin levels, but if blood sugar remains elevated for an extended period, it increases your risk of eye disease. Diabetic eye diseases include:
Diabetic Retinopathy
When high glucose levels in the blood cause damage to the eyes’ blood vessels, diabetic retinopathy can occur. In the beginning, the patient may experience no symptoms, or temporary episodes of blurred vision. However, as the disease progresses, it can result in blindness.
Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)
The macula is located at the centre of the retina. Its main purpose is to provide clear, sharp details in your central vision.
When the retina’s small blood vessels suffer continuous damage, it can lead to a buildup of fluid in the macula. This condition is called diabetic macular edema (DME), which can cause vision loss.
Treatments are available for DME if the disease is caught early and monitored by a qualified optometrist.
