Can Dry Eyes Cause Headaches?

Pesky dry eye symptoms can throw your entire day off balance. This is especially true if you’re spending long hours in front of your computer screen or battling the dryness that comes with allergies. To make matters worse, when headaches strike, this can amplify the inconvenience you’re already suffering from.

If you notice a pattern of both conditions arising simultaneously, it may raise your suspicions. Most of us wouldn’t immediately associate dry eyes with headaches, but the strain and irritation from dry eyes can contribute to headaches.

Exploring this connection might help you find the relief you’re after. Dry eye therapies can help manage symptoms, which can make a noticeable difference in headaches.

Dry Eyes & Headaches: Exploring the Link

Researchers are still exploring the connection between dry eyes and headaches, and we can’t say for certain if x causes y. Instead of focusing on a direct link, it’s worth understanding how dry eyes can stress your visual system.

  • Muscle Fatigue: When your eyes are dry, they must work harder to focus on visual tasks. Compensating for the dryness can fatigue muscles surrounding the eyes, temples, and forehead. This ongoing tension can eventually lead to a headache.
  • Nerve stimulation: The cornea is rich in nerve endings. When it becomes dry and irritated, the cornea sends pain signals to the brain, which can manifest as headaches.
  • Migraines: If you’re prone to migraines, discomfort from dry eyes can act as a trigger. Light sensitivity, which is common with dry eyes, can aggravate migraine symptoms.

The Role of Dry Eye Therapies

While we don’t know for sure whether dry eyes cause headaches, we do know that stress, discomfort, and irritation can worsen any ongoing problems. Taking control and addressing what you can, such as dry eyes, can help you find relief from irritating and persistent symptoms.

Everyone’s eyes are different. And, there is no universal approach to dry eye management. That’s why a dry eye consultation with our expert team focuses on understanding the severity of dryness and evaluating your eye health and accompanying symptoms to create a treatment plan that aligns with you.

Here’s how the dry eye therapies we offer can help:

IPL & RF Treatments

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Radio Frequency (RF) treatments are both designed to tackle chronic dry eye symptoms.

Though the technology behind these treatments differs, they both focus on targeting blockages in the meibomian glands (the glands responsible for producing the oily layer of your tears) to restore their function. In doing so, these treatments improve the quality and stability of tears, keeping your eyes hydrated and comfortable.

A visit to your eye doctor can be more relaxing than you think. These treatments are non-invasive, gentle, and soothing, making it feel as though you’re treating your eyes to a spa day. Besides, less stress can help with headache management.

Meibomian Gland Therapies

The tear film covers the eye’s surface, spreading tears evenly each time you blink. More than helping you express intense emotions, tears serve a functional purpose. They protect your eyes from harmful irritants and keep your eyes moist and comfortable.

An imbalance in the tear film (driven by factors that cause or contribute to dry eyes) affects the quality of tears, leading to dry eyes. This is where meibomian glands become relevant.

Meibomian glands secrete the oil component of tears, which prevents them from evaporating too quickly from the eye’s surface. Any clogs or blockages in these glands cause disruption, leading to an unstable tear film and dry eyes.

IPL and RF therapies are in-office treatments that target and stimulate the meibomian glands to restore their proper function. But there are ways you can unclog these glands at home!

Use a warm compress mask (or a cloth) and gently place it over your eyelids. Massage around the area with your fingers to help stimulate the meibomian glands and melt any blockages. This helps improve the natural flow of oils, restores proper gland function, and improves the tear film.

With consistency and time, you should experience less inflammation as well as relief from dry eye discomfort. Besides, this at-home solution is a great way to maintain the results of your in-clinic therapies.
